They say, “Make plans and hear God laugh!” and let’s just say, He’s had quite the chuckle watching my life unfold.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to open a home decor store. You know that feeling when you walk into a space and it just feels right? Cozy, layered, a mix of textures and stories that make you want to sit down and stay awhile, that’s the feeling I’ve always wanted to create.
My journey started in Illinois, where I raised my four amazing kids, the best (and wildest) adventure of my life. Once they were grown, I decided to follow my heart and head back to Arizona, where I’d lived briefly after college. It was time for a new chapter: sunshine, open trails, and a fresh start.
I was loving every moment, hiking, biking, making new friends, traveling, and then, one random evening out to dinner, life happened. I met my soulmate. We grew up so similarly, shared the same sense of humor, and he supported all my wild dreams without hesitation. When he asked me to marry him and move to Boston to be closer to his son, I laughed, because, honestly, never in a million billion years did I think I’d live in Boston!
But love wins. So, I packed up, rented out my Arizona house, and began yet another adventure.
As fate would have it, my oldest daughter was living in Boston at the time, so we had a ball exploring the East Coast together, weekend trips, antique hunting, and all the lobster rolls we could handle. When she eventually moved to Nashville (where my other daughter lives), it left a bit of a hole in my heart… but that’s when something unexpected happened.
I pulled out an old family history sheet my dad gave me before he passed, one I’d looked at a hundred times but never really studied. I noticed something: my ancestors, the Stone family, had immigrated to Cambridge, Massachusetts in the 1700s. The Cushing side of my dad’s family landed in Hingham around the same time. Suddenly, it all made sense, the deep pull I felt toward New England, the architecture I adored, the antiques I couldn’t resist. It wasn’t just taste, it was heritage.
And so, the dream resurfaced in a new form: a pop-up shop that honors my family roots and my lifelong love of home. I launched H.L. Stone • Home • Style • Heritage, an online and in-person shop filled with handpicked pieces that speak to timeless craftsmanship and a sense of place.
I’ll admit, technology and I are still getting to know each other. There’s been a learning curve (okay, several curves), but I’m getting there. Every item in my shop is something I’ve fallen in love with, and sometimes it’s heartbreak when they sell! Just last week, I said goodbye to a stunning chest-turned-bar and a hand-painted French box. Both pieces I adored, but I know they’ve gone on to homes where they’ll be cherished, just like they were meant to be.
So that’s my story, part love letter, part leap of faith, and a whole lot of vintage charm. I hope when you visit my shop, you find something that makes your heart skip, something that brings history, beauty, and warmth into your home, just as it has into mine.
After all, every piece I sell has a story, and maybe the next one is yours.
